Michael will provide an overview of the macroeconomy, with a focus on the current state of the U.S. economy and the outlook for 2011. The economic landscape over the next few years will look very different from what we are used to, this presentation will discuss how those differences will affect growth over the next year and beyond.

Rob will discuss how the Virginia economy overall is looking with attention on Hampton Roads Region, and state economic development activities and initiatives resulting from the first year of the Governor’s Administration.

Speaker Biographical Information:

Michael Brown, Economist – Wells Fargo, Bank

Michael Brown is an economist for Wells Fargo Securities. Based in Charlotte N.C., he is responsible for tracking national and regional economic trends. He also provides analysis and commentary on national business investment and state budget issues.

Prior to joining the economics group in 2010, Michael served as an economist and legislative analyst for the Arkansas Bureau of Legislative Research, which serves the Arkansas General Assembly. In this role, Michael focused his research on quantitative public policy analysis and the Arkansas economy.

Michael’s research interests include state budget issues, regional economics, information economics, and econometrics.

Michael earned his B.S. in business economics and his master’s degree in economics from the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville, Ark. He has also completed graduate coursework in economics at Georgia State University, in Atlanta.

Robert W. McClintock, Jr., Research Director - Virginia Economic Development Partnership

Rob McClintock is currently the Research Director for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) with 20 years of service to VEDP and its predecessor agency, the Virginia Department of Economic Development (VDED). He is responsible for managing the development of relevant marketing data and resources to support the business recruitment, retention, and expansion objectives of VEDP. Key functions of the Research Division include generating custom location proposals for Virginia’s business prospects; tracking available real estate inventory throughout the Commonwealth to recommend to business prospects, and producing general economic research information to advance client decision making. He has served as Research Director since 1999.

Immediately prior to this current appointment, he served as Director of Economic Development for Hanover County, Virginia from 1998-1999 leading all phases of a local economic development office including marketing, business assistance programs, and initiation of the county’s first strategic plan for economic development. From 1988-1998, he served with VEDP and VDED with stints managing both community development programs and the business development proposal process.

McClintock is a native of Virginia and a graduate of the University of Richmond (BA, Political Science, 1977) and Virginia Tech (Masters in Urban and Regional Planning, 1984). He is a 1993 graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma.

Professionally, he has also worked as an associate (1978-81) in the Richmond, Virginia based consulting firm of K.W. Poore & Associates, specializing in comprehensive planning and community development projects. From 1981-84, he served as Regional Planner for the Central Virginia Planning District Commission in Lynchburg, Virginia. He worked as Director of Planning and Development in Amherst County, Virginia from 1984-88, and was the county’s first staff person assigned to economic development responsibilities.

Professional affiliations include membership in the American Planning Association, American Institute of Certified Planners, International Economic Development Council, Virginia Economic Developers Association, and the Southern Economic Development Council.
